B.Sc. Midwifery Sciences (dual-cooperative)
Right from the start…
Midwives accompany women and their families from the beginning of pregnancy until the end of breastfeeding period. They support and take care of women in this special phase of life, they independently supervise and conduct physiological births and examine and nurse newborns and infants. Their work is indispensable for the medical and psycho-social well-being of women and their families.
The dual-cooperative Bachelor’s study program Midwifery prepares students for the versatile and highly responsible work of midwives. Theoretical and practical study phases alternate.
The theoretical study phases take place at the university. They also include practical skills-training in modernly equipped simulation rooms with simulation dolls and simulation models, which prepare our students for real life situations.
The practical study phases take place at our clinical and non-clinical cooperation partners, in delivery rooms, pregnancy ambulances, postnatal care wards and in children’s clinics. We also cooperate with non-clinical free-lance midwives, birth centers or obstetrics practices.
Practice consultants take care of our students both during clinical and non-clinical assignments. Students are being remunerated throughout the entire study program.

FAQ
What is the difference between the dual bachelor's degree program in midwifery and the new dual bachelor's degree program in midwifery science?
The midwifery degree program is only for midwives who are already certified and trainees at the midwifery schools in Heidelberg, Lahr, Speyer and Saarbrücken. You can complete this degree program parallel to your professional activity or training as a midwife. The program will be offered for the last time in the winter semester 2021/22.
The course of study in midwifery science is a primary qualifying course of study and is aimed at all prospective students who wish to learn the profession of midwifery. In this degree program, the theory takes place at the university and the practical assignments take place in the clinic and out-of-hospital settings. This course of study will replace training at midwifery schools as a result of the amendment to the Midwifery Act in 2019. Midwifery schools will be allowed to start midwifery training courses for the last time in 2022. From 2023, it will only be possible to become a midwife at colleges and universities.
Can I apply for a practice position at any clinic?
No, you can only apply at the practice facilities (clinics) that cooperate with the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences. In order to apply at the clinics, you will need a provisional certificate of admission from the HWG Ludwigshafen.
Can I also apply first to a practice partner and then to the university?
No, in order to submit a complete application to the practice partner, you need the provisional admission certificate from the university. You will receive this when you apply to the university with the necessary documents during the application period (see above).
What does the status "Offer of admission has been made" in the application portal mean? Do I have to react?
The status "Offer of admission has been made" is an automated status that creates the "Provisional admission certificate" for you. As soon as you find the above-mentioned status in the system, the Preliminary Admission Certificate is already on its way to you by mail.
I am still enrolled at another university. Do I already have to send the exmatriculation certificate with my application?
No, you can submit the de-registration certificate once you have been accepted by a practice partner.
Is the dual study program in midwifery also offered as a part-time program?
Currently, HWG Ludwigshafen offers the dual bachelor's degree program in midwifery only as a full-time program.
I have already completed a degree in Germany. Do I have to pay second study fees?
Yes, the second study fee is currently 650 € per semester.
