Dual bachelor's degree program in midwifery

The dual study program combines and supplements the three-year professional training as a midwife / maternity nurse with a midwifery-specific university degree. It is aimed at qualified midwifery trainees as well as registered midwives and maternity nurses with a university entrance qualification, a university of applied sciences entrance qualification or a previous education recognized as equivalent. The study program was first accredited with the seal of the Accreditation Council in 2011 and most recently by the accreditation agency AHPGS in 2016 for a further six years. The study program has been offered since the winter semester 2011 and starts annually in the winter semester.

General information about the program can be found in the information sheet.

Study objective

The study program is oriented towards the complex requirements in a dynamically developing professional field.
In the course of their studies, students acquire competencies in midwifery, health and social sciences as well as business administration and specialized pedagogy. The acquired competencies should promote a professional and independent professional practice of the graduates. In this way, midwives and maternity nurses are enabled to design, reflect and evaluate their work according to the recognized state of science. Furthermore, they acquire the ability to systematically analyze and solve problems and to critically reflect on ethical issues.
In addition, the program enables students to link their professional practice and their studies in terms of content with a focus on a compulsory elective module. These elective modules for 'practical guidance' or for 'leadership and management of a functional unit', in combination with the further course of study and two years of professional experience, are recognized in Rhineland-Palatinate as a continuing education equivalent.

Professional perspectives and fields of activity are:

  • Original midwifery work as a reflective practitioner
  • Collaboration in networked care models
  • Assumption of conceptual and/or managerial tasks
  • Quality development and process management
  • Professional political fields of work
  • Practice support and guidance
  • Further academic qualification on a national and international level
The Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences offers graduates of the bachelor's degree programs in midwifery and nursing a consecutive master's degree program ( MAIV ).

Study organization and structure

The program is designed as a 7-semester course of study, which is divided into two study phases. The first study phase (1st-4th semester) is integrated into the training or part-time with one fixed study day per week. During this study phase, the fundamentals of midwifery and its related sciences are taught. The second study phase (5th-7th semester) is completed as a full-time course. In addition to the presentation of various concepts for a scientifically based and professional midwifery activity, the focus is on the implementation of self-selected research projects, the specialist pedagogical or business management focus through the elective module (practice guidance or management and leadership of a functional unit) and the preparation of the bachelor thesis. The course of study is modular. The module structure can be found in the module handbook . Each module concludes with a final module examination.

Completion

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded the academic degree "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)" with 180 credit points (ECTS).
