Prof. Dr. Nicole Seiler has agreed to serve as patron of the Förderverein Junge Pflege / Wachkoma e. V.

Prof. Dr. Nicole Seiler, professor in the Department of Nursing Science and Clinical Nursing in Department IV (Social and Health Services) at our university, has agreed to serve as patron for the 2026/2027 term for the Förderverein Junge Pflege / Wachkoma e. V. The appointment took place on September 19, 2026, during the association’s 20th-anniversary celebration at the “Junge Pflege St. Anastasia (Specialized Care for Neurophase F)” facility in Limburgerhof.

The association was founded in 2005. One year later, “Junge Pflege St. Anastasia” opened as the first facility in the region providing care for neurological Phase F patients. Through its work, the association specifically supports needs that are not covered by the standard catalog of services—ranging from supplemental training for staff and programs for family members and loved ones to therapeutic devices not listed in the assistive devices registry.

“That sounds like trivialities. It’s the opposite. It’s a mindset: A person isn’t defined by what they’re entitled to. They’re defined by what makes them who they are.”

A Blind Spot in Care
In her speech, Prof. Dr. Seiler provided a professional classification of this specialized formof care: It primarily affects young people whose life stories have been divided into a “before” and an “after”—for example, due to an accident with corresponding consequences. Intensive care and neurological rehabilitation are followed by long-term rehabilitative care—and thus, as a rule, by the framework of long-term care insurance under SGB XI, which only partially meets the high need for participation among this age group. She devoted particular attention to family members and loved ones who experience what is known as an “ambiguous loss” and are often additionally burdened financially, as well as to professional caregivers and therapists, whose highly demanding work can be accompanied by considerable emotional strain.

Prof. Dr. Seiler is a certified geriatric nurse and has been active in the field of nursing for 23 years. In her education, she focuses, among other things, on people who are largely invisible within the healthcare system. Through her patronage, she aims to raise awareness of Phase F care, for example within the HWG Ludwigshafen’s primary nursing degree program, and to facilitate student internships.
