Popularity for additional safety precautions and on-site testing opportunities
After a forced break last year due to coronavirus, the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) once again invited all interested parties to an "Open Day" on campus on Saturday, November 20, 2021, from 10 am to 2 pm. However, there were also restrictions this year: Due to the rising number of infections, the university management had decided last week that it would only be possible to enter the university building after presenting a negative test certificate. Visitors who did not have a test with them were able to carry out a self-test under supervision in front of the main entrance.
In the A-Building at Ernst-Boehe-Straße 4 in Ludwigshafen-Mundenheim, interested parties were then able to find out about the more than 40 study programs at HWG LU from the four Departments and the Graduate School Rhine-Neckar. The program also included taster lectures, information presentations and mini language courses in Japanese, Chinese and Korean in the auditorium and conference rooms. The hourly campus tours conducted by students were also well received. Information stands from the Student Service Center, arbeiterkind.de and the International Office, where future students could get an idea of admisson requirements, scholarships or study abroad opportunities, rounded off the offer.
Binding exchange about personal study ambitions
Although only a third of the previous number of guests found their way to the university at this year's Open Day, University President Prof. Dr. Peter Mudra was very satisfied with how the four-hour event went: "We noticed that the number of in-depth consultations this time was significantly higher in relation to the total number of visitors than in the past. Our impression was that most of those who accepted our invitation on Saturday made very deliberate use of this face-to-face opportunity to have a binding exchange about their personal study ambitions and how they fit in with our study programs."
The university president was also pleased with the guests' acceptance of the short-term tightening of safety measures: "We received a lot of encouragement for our safety precautions of testing all guests and employees before entering the buildings, despite the fact that they had already been vaccinated. This further reduced the potential risk of infection for everyone involved at such an in-person event."
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, HWG LU has held two online information days for prospective students. The digital offering also includes a landing page aimed specifically at this target group. Nevertheless, it is important for many future students to get to know their university in person, says Peter Mudra. For this reason, HWG LU will continue to pursue a two-pronged approach to information events and student advisory services in the future and offer the target group attractive face-to-face and online formats.
