Bachelor of Social Work dual

Social work dual (B.A.)

New range of courses from winter semester 2026/27

Profile

Practice-integrated, critical, reflective - the interplay of two learning locations

The dual Bachelor's degree course in Social Work is characterized by its special focus: Social work is understood as a science that takes a critical look at social inequality and at the same time relates to society as a whole as work on social issues.

The degree program is characterized by the close integration of two places of learning. Students acquire their specialist knowledge at the university and continuously put it to the test in their practical placement under the conditions of professional social work. In this way, theoretical perspectives and practical experience are systematically combined and mutually reflected upon.

The dual degree programs are particularly aimed at people who want to reflect on social problems and forms of dealing with social inequality and social exclusion in the interplay of theory and practice and who are looking for perspectives on how people in difficult life situations can be supported and accompanied in their self-determined lifestyle through social work.

Would you like to study Social Work in the dual system at the HWG Ludwigshafen and would like more information? If you have any questions about the content or would like advice on the degree programs, please contact Prof. Dr. Lena Loge, head of degree programs, or Maximilian Schütz, practice coordinator.

Content & procedure

Study structure

The dual Bachelor's degree course in Social Work has a modular structure and a standard period of study of seven semesters. A central feature of the degree programs is the continuous interaction between theory and practice. Throughout their studies, students are linked to a practical placement, which is organized on a weekly basis: from Monday to Wednesday, students study, and on Thursdays and Fridays they do their practical work. During the lecture-free period, practical work is flexible. The scope of the practical work corresponds to an average of half a job and is remunerated accordingly. If you have any questions about the dual system, application options, the course of study or the degree programs as a whole, the practical coordination of the degree program will support you with a continuous range of advice.

The modules generally extend over two semesters and are each completed with a module examination. Many modules are completed by dual students together with regular social work students. To dovetail the theoretical and practical parts of the course, special theory-practice modules are anchored in the dual study program. These include

  • Problem construction in practice

  • Research in practice I

  • Practical semester

  • Research in practice II

  • Criticism and perspectives of social work

In addition, an external internship of 180 hours is planned in the third semester. During this internship, students leave their regular place of work to gain insights into another field of social work.

In the fourth semester, students complete an internship semester of 750 hours. During this time, they work full-time at their regular placement.

The course-specific page for examination matters can be found here. Under this link you will also find the current editions of the General and Special Examination Regulations for the degree program.

Qualification

The degree programs lead to the Bachelor of Arts (B. A.) degree, which qualifies students for further academic qualifications. A three-semester consecutive Master's degree program in Social Work is offered at the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society.

At the same time, graduates acquire state recognition as a social worker/social pedagogue (B.A.). The degree programs qualify students for all professional fields of social work: in social administration, with non-profit and private commercial social work providers, in the justice system, in the areas of education, work and leisure, in work with children and young people, in the areas of health and rehabilitation, in cultural education as well as in business and research.

Application & Admission

Those interested in the dual study option first apply directly to a practical placement. There they go through a selection process. If a practice site selects a person, it proposes them as a candidate for the study place. The application periods of the internships start at different times. Prospective students should therefore find out about deadlines from the respective institutions at an early stage.

If a practical placement has been accepted in the form of a qualification contract and the university's admisson requirements have been met, enrolment at the university can take place. The application or registration at the university is carried out by the students themselves. It is not carried out automatically by the practice placement.

An overview of current practice partners can be found here. Information on vacancies, dual study places and contact persons can be found on the websites of the respective practice centers.
