Attending BASF's Apprenticeship Day

On Saturday, September 24, 2022, BASF once again opened its doors at the Ludwigshafen site to give young people an insight into working life and training opportunities at BASF. At Gate 11, where the training department provided information at several booths, interested young people and their parents explored the practical presentation of the more than 30 different apprenticeships and dual study programs.

Presentations included reports on the changing professional world in IT and how BASF SE is shaping training along the digital transformation. Both the trainers and several trainees were available for discussions. Young people with specific career aspirations had the opportunity to have applications reviewed directly on site.

The opportunity to inquire with our students from IBA and IBAIT and also to talk to those responsible for the course of study was used with great enthusiasm. Prof. Dr. Gerhard Raab and Kathrin Paul presented beside some students the dual study programs:
"Internationale Betriebswirtschaftslehre -International Business Administration (IBA)"(B.Sc.) and "Internationale Wirtschaftsinformatik -International Business Administration and Information Technology (IBAIT)"(B.Sc.).

The combination of six semesters, practical phases in a partner company from the business world as well as a stay abroad offers both practice-oriented and internationally oriented courses of study an excellent entry into many professional fields. BASF SE and the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences have been working together as cooperation partners for more than 25 years.

Interested students apply directly to the company (see the pages for IBA & IBAIT). The program starts once a year, on August 1. Applications can already be submitted for the IBA and IBAIT programs for the start of training in 2023.

Finally abroad again ! - After a two-year break due to the pandemic, IBA students travel to European offices

In May 2022, IBA students were once again able to gain experience abroad in connection with their studies after it had to be cancelled for two years due to the pandemic. The joy of the students was great! The fourth semester is scheduled for study abroad in this program, with an initial six weeks at HWG in Ludwigshafen followed by travel. In the process, students gain valuable experience in a wide variety of fields.

IBA students traveled to a location of their partner company within Europe for almost five months. During this time they worked there and at the same time wrote their foreign thesis (a scientific paper dealing with an international issue in the respective department abroad).

They went to a wide variety of places, in pairs, threes or solo. The destinations were Oslo (Norway), Brussels (Belgium), Vilnius (Lithuania), Copenhagen (Denmark), Prague (Czech Republic), Bratislava (Slovakia), Vienna (Austria) and Budapest (Hungary). There, the students were allowed to work in various areas, e.g. Sales, Customer Service, Commercial, Marketing, Human Resources, Finance and Credit Management. The tasks were for example: in HR departments, conducting quick interviews or searching for cooperation opportunities; assisting in digital projects, solving problems regarding delivery difficulties, data analysis, product management, but also accompanying the given processes in order to get as many job-related impressions as possible.

From the IBA students came consistently very positive feedback on the countries and cultures. Especially exciting were food, open-mindedness of the people and different mindsets about career and life design.

Thanks go to the IBA partner companies BASF SE and JT International.

Recognizing Outperformers - UWF Lecture at international lecture series: "How to pick the next Facebook?"

To mark the 50th anniversary of HWG Ludwigshafen, the International Affairs Department together with the Transatlantic Institute offers an international lecture series with selected partner universities. On June 17, 2021, the guest lecture of the University of West Florida (UWF) took place in this series:

Ms. Melissa Brode, as Associate Dean and Director of Graduate Programs of the College for Business at UWF, gave an overview of the long-standing cooperation and especially the direction of the successful MBA program with the Transatlantic Institute. UWF, which was founded in 1963, currently has five academic colleges and a variety of bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs. HWG LU's Transatlantic Institute, led by Prof. Gerhard Raab as executive director and Kathrin Paul as managing director, has a long-standing partnership with UWF that is kept alive with many reciprocal visits. The lecture series is of particular interest to students of the BIP program, as universities are presented which can be attended as part of the dual BIP program (International Business Administration (IBA), International Business Informatics - International Business Administration and Information Technology (IBAIT)) to obtain a U.S. MBA degree.

The introduction of the university was followed by an exciting finance lecture by Prof. Dr. Kwan-Chen Ma (Professor of Finance) on "How to Pick the Next Facebook?" The lecture took a close look at the interplay between business strategy and stock performance. In the context of investment banking, the question is whether outperformers can be identified at an early stage so that a favorable investment is still possible. Prof. Ma compared the share price performance of public companies listed on the Stock Exchange or included in major indices with the significance of the innovative business models for the competition and what growth prospects are discernible. In the process, Prof. Ma and his students have compiled some interesting criteria. In addition to well-known characteristics such as "disruptive" business ideas or "first-mover" consideration of the business model, a "de facto" monopoly and the approaches "bully- powerful enough to annoy others" are also criteria to discover the next outperformer. In a dialogical lecture style, Prof. Dr. Ma took the audience with him, who made some contributions and asked questions.

We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Kwan-Chen Ma and Ms. Melissa Brode for their participation in the lecture series and look forward to a continuation of this format.

The international lecture series is integrated into the project "EPTRAC - Experience and Passion in Transatlantic Relations and Collaboration" funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the funding program "IVAC - International Virtual Academic Collaboration". The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports the program "IVAC - International Virtual Academic Collaboration" with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Exchange of experience abroad of IBA and IBAIT students

"Roman vs. Michi - The Duel for the World"

November 13, 2019 - an exciting evening was in store. The four-month stay abroad of the dual BIP degree programs International Business Administration - International Business Administration (IBA) and International Business Information Technology - International Business Administration and Information Technology (IBAIT) had come to an end at the end of September and was now to be revived in a visual way for the following BIP years, company and university representatives, and everyone involved.
Professor Dr. Edith Rueger-Muck, President of the School of International Affairs and Diversity, welcomed the guests and opened the evening.
Full of new experiences and formative impressions in their luggage, an exciting "duel around the world" started, which, in the style of Joko and Klaas' TV show, was intended to take the audience on our journey(s) and provide insights into all destinations.
Few could have staged the two TV heroes better than BIP's Michael Marchenko and Roman Trott.
15 exciting travel destinations were presented, all of which contained their very own "challenge" - and 15 times one could look forward to thunderous applause, while one could recognize the all too familiar wanderlust in the faces of the viewers. The following year supported the "duel" by having one team each compete against each other on stage for the two presenters Roman and Michi. For each continent there was an additional challenge to master to determine the winning team at the end.

The world tour started in Asia, followed by Europe and finally Central and South America. The presentation of the individual destinations provided numerous insights: Facts & Figures about the country, a short presentation of the practical application, Do's & Dont's as well as one or the other funny anecdote. Here, for example, the audience learned  about apparently "married" IBAs who had to protect themselves from the military with their little white lie. Highlight were the video contributions, in which the most impressive moments of the stays were arranged.

As humorously as the presenters led through the evening, the cultural differences that the IBAs had experienced first-hand during their time abroad became palpable at many points: not only in the area of food and travel, but also in the way people interacted with each other, at work, and in the everyday challenges on site.
Guests gained insights into dealing with rainy days in Kuala Lumpur, live impressions of protests in Hong Kong, food experiments in Bangkok, heightened security in Mexico, language challenges in China, weekend trips in Europe, small talk rules in Hungary, startup feeling in Slovakia, flat hierarchies in Belgium, mate tea in Uruguay, and biodiversity and pura vida in Costa Rica.
The IBAIT students, who spent a trimester at Tongji University in Shanghai and then got to know Chinese work culture in a six-week internship, rounded off the evening with their own impressive report.
Even though much of the evening revolved around the organization of non-working time abroad, one could clearly see that the topic of work was nevertheless never neglected and none of the students was underchallenged.

After the last performance, the score was looked at - victory for Team Roman. After thanking all those who had made this stay possible, the finale of the evening once again highlighted the end of the study abroad phase - how quickly you can "fly through" a period of time and suddenly the light goes on again - you are back, back in Ludwigshafen.

Exchange of experience abroad of IBA and IBAIT students

"The BIP Cave"

On the evening of November 15, 2018, it was that time again: after a four-month stay in the most diverse countries of the world, the foreign experience exchange of the BIP study programs International Business Administration (IBA) and International Business Administration and Information Technology (IBAIT) took place. The students had gained numerous experiences in their study and practical assignments abroad and now invited to share their impressions. The representatives of the university, the partner companies as well as the successors of the BIP study programs had come together to listen to the reports of the returned globetrotters.

In accordance with a long-standing tradition, we were also pleased to welcome the President of the University, Professor Dr. Mudra, who opened the evening with a motivational speech in the spirit of intercultural exchange. The motto of the event was "The BIPs' Den", a variation of the entertainment show "The Lions' Den". Presenters Sascha Dietz and Adrian Pohlmann took the guests on a journey with eleven stops along the way. The lions of the show were also not to be missed: Three students from each of the subsequent years were allowed on stage and had the task of teasing out particularly interesting facts and anecdotes from the presenters.

The audience found themselves in a veritable jet-set frenzy: From Malaysia, they traveled to Austria - from there, the plane took them back to Singapore. Thus, in the course of the evening, the audience travelled from Europe to Asia and back again. The presentations started with a brief country overview, followed by a presentation of the practical assignments. The stories were accompanied by videos and numerous pictures. The final part was a SWOT analysis: strengths and weaknesses were related to work and accommodation, opportunities and threats to the culture of the country.

It was not uncommon for the weather to be mentioned as a threat to the countries, including Hong Kong and Singapore, where the BIPs had survived a rainy season and extreme heat. In Austria, where the weather had been good all summer, similar to Germany, the student jokingly warned of seas of tourists during the Salzburg Festival. The IBAs in Belgium, on the other hand, had seized the opportunity to get to know Germany's otherwise seldom-visited neighbor from all sides.

Through the contrast of successive cultures, it became clear that intercultural exchange had indeed been lived. The presenters from Malaysia, for example, reported on the influence of religion on everyday working life and told how they had taken prayer times into account when scheduling meetings in addition to lunch break times. In the Netherlands, on the other hand, the car had been quickly traded in for a bicycle and they had enjoyed lively small talk and a more relaxed work culture.

During the break, the next cohorts, who will be traveling to different parts of the world next year, had the chance to talk to the BIPs in person.

Then it was on to the IBAIT students, who spent a trimester at Tongji University in Shanghai and then got to know the Chinese work culture in a six-week internship. This was followed by reports from Spain, Mexico, Hungary and Poland. In addition to the often less strict work culture, such as in Mexico, where the World Cup had been celebrated in the company with public viewing, it was noticeable that the BIPs had been entrusted with many independent projects. The design and implementation of an entire marketing concept in Spain is just one of the many examples that prove that the students were able to rise above themselves not only through intercultural exchange, but also through challenging tasks. In the dialogue with the lions, even the last insider tips and anecdotes were brought to light: for example, Budapest's cuisine and the country's joy of celebration were praised, and it was suggested that the lesser-known corners of Warsaw should also be explored.

After about four hours, the evening ended with a slide show that summarized the multifaceted nature of what had been experienced. One thing is clear: after all these years, the BIPs have once again succeeded in creating a varied and impressive evening, so that we can look forward to next year with excitement and expectation.

Economics Minister Dr. Volker Wissing pleads for more Europe in lecture

"Europe: Challenge and Future" - Economics Minister Dr. Volker Wissing held lecture as part of the economics lecture cycle

On November 30, 2018, Dr. Volker Wissing, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economics of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, was a guest at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences to discuss the topic "Europe: Challenges and Future" with students of the degree programs International Business Administration and International Business Administration and Information Technology as well as other guest students. The lecture took place as part of the economics lecture cycle of the Chair of Economics and Statistics, to which Prof. Dr. Marcus Sidki regularly invites guest speakers from economics and politics on relevant and current economic policy topics to the university.

After a welcoming address by the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Peter Mudra, Sidki introduced the topic and underlined the economic-political importance and necessity of an intensified examination of the further development of the European Union. Subsequently, Economics Minister Dr. Volker Wissing addressed various issues of European policy: Against the background of the historical development of today's Europe, Wissing outlined in particular the high importance of a functioning cooperation between France and Germany. In this context, he expressly welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal to create a European army. The future of a functioning and widely accepted Europe does not lie in a return to individual nation states, but rather in increased cooperation between the community of states and a deepening of the European Union.

During the concluding Q&A session, a lively and sometimes controversial discussion ensued on various aspects of current European policy.

The format of the economics lecture cycle aims to promote exchange and dialogue between the university, business and society, as well as to show students how what they have learned relates to practice.

IBA and IBAIT degree programs from the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences represented at BASF Experience Day 2018 at the Ludwigshafen site.

On Saturday, September 22, 2018, around 15,000 visitors took advantage of a total of twelve experience stations to gain an insight into working life at BASF's Ludwigshafen site. At Gate 11, where the training department had opened its doors, more than 5,000 visitors explored the hands-on presentation of the more than 30 different apprenticeships and dual study programs.

Pupils and parents were able to find out from trainees and instructors about training opportunities at BASF's Ludwigshafen site, take part in numerous hands-on activities and listen to exciting presentations. Numerous young people got a taste of some of the professions and in some cases were able to apply directly on the spot. The many positive responses from the visitors show that the event once again exactly met their tastes.

A small impression of the experience day is available at www.facebook.com/basfausbildung,www.instagram.com/basf.ausbildung
or RON-TV.

Prof. Dr. Gerhard Raab and Kathrin Paul presented the dual study programs International Business Administration (IBA) (B.Sc.) and International Business Information Technology (IBAIT) (B.Sc.) at BASF as part of the "BASF Experience Day".

The new image film (see link) of the IBAIT program was particularly well received by the visitors, as was the opportunity to exchange ideas with those responsible for the program and the students.

BASF SE has been a cooperation partner of the IBA and IBAIT study programs for more than 20 years. These practice-oriented and internationally oriented bachelor's degree programs offer an excellent introduction to many professions thanks to the combination of six semesters, practical phases in a partner company from industry and a stay abroad.

Those interested should apply directly to the company at www.basf.com/ausbildung (see the pages for IBA & IBAIT).

The dual study program starts once a year, on August 1. Applications can be submitted at any time.

3rd place for IBA students at the "Tournoi Européen de Gestion

In March of this year, the "Tournoi Européen de Gestion" took place in Strasbourg for the 24th time, in which four female students of the dual study program "International Business Administration (IBA)" of the University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen participated and were able to achieve an attractive 3rd place.

The goal this year was to sell different types of boats, taking into account criteria such as payment deadlines, customer satisfaction and marketing measures. The international business game was structured in such a way that, over an entire fiscal year, monthly decisions had to be made by 21 groups from different regions of France as well as Germany on procurement, production, finance, personnel and sales. Each group had the task of setting up its own company with an independent identity. The students then had to act profitably for the fictitious company in a short period of time.

The international business game enabled the students to apply the knowledge they had acquired at university in a practical environment and also to use their English and French skills. The company simulation was designed to be very realistic, so that the students had to read and understand balance sheets, for example, but also keep employee satisfaction at a high level. Due to the tight schedule and business decisions, working under time pressure was also trained.

For the four students Anna-Lena Gläßgen, Alicia Schünemann, Melina Thiel and Lisa Weppner, this international competition offered the opportunity to make new contacts with French and German students. "All in all, the two days in Strasbourg were an educational experience that we will certainly keep in very good memory," they summed up. Their special thanks also go to Prof. Dr. R. Mohr for the comprehensive supervision during the two days of the competition.

"Wilhelm is looking for friends!" - Innovative IBA students create media campaign for the young sponsoring group of the Wilhelm-Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen

"Factory dirt that has been forced to become a city," even the famous philosopher Ernst Bloch said of his native city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein. The industrial city in the heart of the Rhine-Neckar metropolis defies its image with a burgeoning urban artist scene. The Wilhelm-Hack Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art in particular recognized this trend early on and is establishing itself as the nucleus of the new scene through numerous offerings. In spring 2017, a seminar project by students of the dual intensive course International Business Administration (IBA) developed into the young support group "Wilhelms Freunde", a committed group of people between 20 and 35 years of age. Together they organize multimedia and social events where art does not always have to be the focus. Their long-term goals are to be active supporters of the Wilhelm-Hack Museum and to create a common space for young people from Ludwigshafen and the surrounding area who are interested in art.

After initial founding euphoria, the Wilhelms Freunde face a problem that can also be projected, at least in its basic features, onto other organizations: The number of actually active members stagnates and prevents further growth. However, this is absolutely necessary in order to expand the independence as well as to secure their ability to act in the long term.

Four students addressed this problem in the winter semester 2017/18 as part of the main seminar "Neuroeconomics and Customer Behavior" by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Raab. Under the title "Willi sucht Freunde!" ("Willi is looking for friends!"), a cross-media advertising concept was developed that communicates this catchy central idea across several channels in parallel.

Based on an analysis of the current membership situation and discussions with the management team of "Wilhelms Freunde", common goals were developed and appropriate measures derived from them.

In addition to the optimization of the Internet presence and the development of new event concepts, the publication of a brochure was also proposed, which is intended primarily to address young Ludwigshafeners who have moved to the city and are new to Ludwigshafen and have so far only known the gray sides of the industrial city. Therefore, the brochure "Willi says Welcome" is primarily aimed at students of the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences as well as young professionals of local companies, which exactly match the target group. The brochure contains useful everyday tips about Ludwigshafen, provides information about art, culture and sports activities, and offers information about restaurants and the city's nightlife. A special highlight and of particular interest to non-Palatine residents is the "Palatine - German" language course, which is also included.

In 2018, the "Wilhelms Freunde" want to implement the concept of the cross-media advertising campaign and thus gain at least ten new and active members.

Award for IBA female students in Strasbourg

At the "23ème Tournoi Européen de Gestion", four students from the International Business Administration (IBA) course at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences came 3rd in the "Communication" competence area.

The competition, which takes place annually in Strasbourg, was attended by 18 teams, each with four members from different regions of Germany and France. As part of a business game, their task was to run a virtual T-shirt company as profitably as possible. A market was simulated over a period of 12 months. The teams had to make decisions for the further strategy for each business month, which included, for example, considerations regarding the selection of suppliers, as well as materials and pricing strategy. The simulation was divided into five competence areas: communication, marketing, finance, profitability and overall strategy, for each of which the best four teams were awarded prizes.

The business game thus provided a very good opportunity to apply and further deepen theoretical knowledge in a practical environment. The stay in Strasbourg also gave the four students Daniela Ceranski, Melis Metin, Kathrin Schneider and Nina Friese the chance to exchange ideas with other participants , which also contributed to making the project a very special experience for them.

Exchange of experiences abroad IBA and IBAIT students: Setting out into the world

At this year's exchange of experiences abroad, the students of the BIP degree programs, International Business Administration (IBA) and International Business Administration and Information Technology (IBAIT) at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences, presented themselves as cosmopolitan and international. The BIP class of 2014 invited students to an exchange of experiences abroad on Nov. 17, 2016, in the auditorium of the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences. Also present were the supervisors of the partner companies and some professors of the university. As a special guest, the students were able to welcome the president of the university, Prof. Dr. Peter Mudra, who emphasized in his welcoming speech the special importance of experiences abroad within the framework of studies and their significance for the personal development of the students. He himself reported on his numerous stays abroad, during which he was able to establish international contacts. In his speech, President Prof. Dr. Mudra also emphasized that the students had traveled the world both as representatives of the companies and as representatives of the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences.

In the following broadcast "BIP Total", the students were allowed to report on their global stops as guests of the presenters, Philip Röder and Maximilian Schreiber. As in previous years, a large proportion of the dual students had gone to Asia. The Asian destinations were China, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. On their trip around the world, the IBAIT students went first to Shanghai, where they were the only group to spend not only a practical phase but also a semester abroad at Tongji University. Thanks to the Chinese lessons at the university, all IBAITs were able to master everyday life in China without any problems. For the first time, in addition to the IBAITs, two brave IBAs also dared to go to China and it was off to Nanjing for the two, where they appeared as a highlight in a Chinese TV show. In Kuala Lumpur, IBA student Jessica Orth was not afraid to try the country's typical dish, nasi lemak.
Some students were also drawn this year to countries not too far away, such as France, Turkey and Spain. The trip continued via Chile to Mexico and finally to the USA. Of course, in addition to cultural experiences, study and work were also on the daily agenda for all students. For example, IBA and IBAIT students reported on their practical assignments and tasks in departments abroad, which differed from country to country. A highlight of the exchange of experiences abroad are the travel tips with numerous impressions in the form of pictures and videos from the individual destinations, which were also not to be missed this year. Thus, unadulterated impressions of the sights of all regions were shown: from dream beaches to temples and deserts to impressive skylines. During the three-hour program, the guests had the opportunity to learn a lot of interesting facts about the countries and to experience a little wanderlust. The information was particularly interesting for the following year, as they too will be going abroad in a few months.

Vanessa Krennerich (student of the IBAIT program)

Exchange of experience abroad IBA and IBAIT students: from Ludwigshafen to the world - dual students on new paths

International and cosmopolitan - that's how the dual students of the International Business Administration (IBA) and International Business Administration and Information Technology (IBAIT) programs at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences presented themselves. The class of 2013 invited to the exchange of experiences abroad in the auditorium of the University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen. Representatives of the partner companies and professors were also present. In his welcoming speech, Professor Dr. Andreas Gissel, Vice President for International Affairs at the university, emphasized above all the influence of visits abroad on students' personal development. As usual, he spoke competently and entertainingly about the importance of international contacts, which he himself has already made during numerous stays abroad. During the following "duel around the world", the students reported on their global stations, during which various "challenges" were also set - one country challenging another with an assignment. For example, students in Chile had to publicly recite a love poem by Pablo Neruda. The journey took them via Chile to the USA, then on to Spain and Switzerland. The majority of students on the IBA and IBAIT dual degree programs were in Asia, namely Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Shanghai. In keeping with the countries, the program was also colorfully mixed - Tim Dreisbach from Singapore presented himself on stage in traditional garb, while Tatjana Treuke in Geneva showed no fear of the most intense cheese smell. Of course, work and study were also on the agenda alongside "challenges" and cultural events. For example, the students reported on their practical assignments in the local departments, which varied greatly depending on the country. The IBAITs were the only group to spend not only an internship abroad but also a semester abroad: at Tongji University in Shanghai, they spent a semester getting to know Chinese university life up close and personal.

An annual highlight of the foreign experience exchanges are travel tips from the individual countries, virtually directly from insiders. This year, too, numerous pictures provided unadulterated impressions of the sights of each region: from the jungle in Malaysia to Indonesian temples or the desert in Chile. In around three hours, the guests were thus able to take away one or two things worth knowing from the exchange. For many, this was not at all uninteresting, since the next class will be going abroad in a few months. By the way: In the "duel around the world" there was no final winner of the "challenges" - those of the dual students of the 2013 class who had been abroad could only win...

Visiting professor William L. Murray from San Francisco honored with university medal

On October 21, the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society honored US-American Professor William L. Murray with the University Medal. At the suggestion of Prof. Dr. Gerhard Raab and Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Beißner from the Department of Marketing and Human Resource Management, it honored Murray's outstanding services as a long-standing guest lecturer and his special commitment to education. The finance expert was the first visiting lecturer at the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society, where he gave lectures on finance from 1997 to 2013, first on the International Business Administration (IBA) degree program and then from 2005 on the International Business Administration and Information Technology (IBAIT) program as a visiting professor. Murray was also involved in education in the MBA program of the Transatlantic Institute in cooperation with the University of West Florida in Pensacola. From 1978 until his official retirement, he taught as a full professor at the University of San Francisco in the USA. He also worked as an independent consultant in the fields of corporate planning and financial strategy and taught as a visiting professor at other universities such as the University of California, Berkeley and the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, China.

Murray traveled from the USA with family and friends to attend the award ceremony on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society. Some of his former students also took the opportunity to attend. "With the award of the University Medal, we want to say thank you and pay tribute to a man who has decisively advanced the internationality of our education and for whom his profession is also a vocation," said University President Professor Dr. Peter Mudra. "The number of air miles alone that William Murray has covered in the service of his visiting professorship in Ludwigshafen is so high that he should easily be awarded the status of a senator at Lufthansa," joked Professor Dr. Andreas Gissel, Vice President for International Affairs, in his laudatory speech, adding: "Not to mention the many lessons he has given here over the last 17 years. Murray - or Bill, as he was quickly nicknamed by his students - started here at the university when Bill Clinton was in his first term of office in the USA, Helmut Kohl was Chancellor in Germany and Jürgen Kliensmann was still actively playing for the German national soccer team." The second laudator, Professor Dr. Karl-Heinz Beißner, head of the BIP degree programs, also emphasized the long period of good cooperation with Professor Murray and recalled the beginnings with a wink - the first contact in 1995 in San Francisco and the first lectures in 1996 in Ludwigshafen. "That was intercultural and administrative training for both of us in terms of German administration," Beißner recalled, referring to questions about salaries and social security that had to be clarified at the beginning. "I would like to thank William Murray for his many years of friendship, support and inspiration. With his enthusiasm, he was and is a role model for me in education," said Beißner.

In his acceptance speech, Professor William Murray also looked back with joy and pride on "the amazing time" of his teaching career in Ludwigshafen and the Business and International Program (BIP): "Since I am the longest serving BiP guest professor it is my unique opportunity to make some comments about the development of the program and its students over the years. What a joy it has been to get to know these students and follow along with them as their careers and lives unfold! This is an excellent program; well-designed and extremely well managed. I am very proud to tell my colleagues worldwide of my association with it. What a joy it was each year to get to return to my second home, meet the new (to me) class, get to know them, and hear of the successes of those alumni that keep in touch."

The supporting program specially organized for Murray around the official medal ceremony also testifies to the great bond between the university and its first visiting professor: Professor Murray and his guests were welcomed by the BIP degree programs team with a "Welcome Reception" in Turmstraße before the award ceremony and invited to a wine tastingon the university's wine campus in Neustadt an der Weinstraße after the official part. The celebrations finally came to a fitting Degree in a restaurant in the Palatinate. Here, Professor Dr. Gerhard Raab (Head of the IBA and IBAIT courses) paid tribute to the many years of good cooperation with Professor Murray, which has now grown into a good and warm friendship. Bill Murray was and will always remain an integral part of the BIP team.

First semester welcome of the dual study programs IBA and IBAIT

On August 27, 2015, the induction day for the "new" students of the dual and international degree programs International Business Administration (IBA) and International Business Administration and Information Technology (IBAIT) took place at Turmstraße 8 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. In addition to important information about the cooperating companies and reports on the experiences of graduates, the introductory event offers the opportunity for a lively exchange between lecturers, students and company representatives. In addition to BASF SE, BASF Business-Services GmbH, SAP SE, SIMONA AG, EM-Technik GmbH and JTI (Japan Tobacco International), the new partner companies - Berrang GmbH, Sensus GmbH and Parker Hannifin Corporation are among the cooperation partners for the BIP 2015 academic year.

The afternoon started with the welcome of the participants by the head of the study program Prof. Dr. Raab. This was followed by presentations of the companies by the students. This gave everyone an interesting first insight into the partner companies and the students' areas of responsibility.

Following the presentations, a graduate of the IBA program and a graduate of the IBAIT program introduced themselves. They spoke about topics that are particularly relevant at the beginning of a degree program: Why was the BIP program chosen at that time? What were the expectations / hopes, possibly also concerns, at the beginning of the studies, during the course of the studies? How was the transition from high school to university perceived or mastered? How are the studies seen today in retrospect? How was the start into professional life? An IBAIT graduate reported on a variety of experiences during his studies and an interesting time during the six-month stay abroad in China, which is obligatory in the IBAIT program. A stay abroad in a subsidiary abroad is also compulsory in the IBA degree program. The graduates' outlooks on further career steps were also of particular interest. One former IBA student, for example, has already completed a Master of Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has now found an ideal start for him at his partner company, BASF SE. A BASF SE graduate has opted for the part-time Master of Business Administration at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, which starts in January 2016. She graduated with her bachelor's degree in mid-August 2015 and was also able to start directly at BASF SE in the packaging materials purchasing department with her first position. After completing his master's degree and gaining a few years of work experience, a former IBAIT student is pursuing a doctorate in cooperation with his partner company, SAP SE.

The testimonials clearly highlighted that the international nature of the degree programs provides diverse insights into different cultures. The visiting professors from various parts of the world, whose courses are held in English, also make a valuable contribution to this. In addition, it is clear from the reports that the dual and international study programs IBA and IBAIT offer an optimal dovetailing of theory and practice.

The successful and interesting event came to a pleasant end with a joint barbecue in the evening.

Student of the dual study program IBA of the University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen participates in the Go & See Tour

"The Tesla is a fascinating machine".

By Andreas Römer: June 29, 2015

Alex Schurig has prevailed in the application process: He is the Tesla driver on this year's Go & See Tour and will be touring innovative RWE sites with forward-looking energy projects. For the 22-year-old, the 3,000-kilometer tour is an exciting conclusion to his dual training program at RWE Deutschland. We spoke to him before the start of the tour.

team: Why did you apply to be a driver for the Go & See Tour?
Alex:
Of course, the Tesla was a particular incentive for me! Not everyone gets the opportunity to drive all over Europe for two weeks in a premium class e-car. I'm really looking forward to it, because the Tesla is really a fascinating machine! I also applied because I'm curious about RWE's Europe-wide energy projects. During my dual training, I've already worked at international sites, but I think there's still a lot to see.

team: The Tesla has an electric drive, is highly powered with 420 hp and weighs 2.1 tons - you don't drive a car like that every day. Nervous?
Alex: Of course, you need a bit of driving experience before you can take the Tesla on a longer tour. That's why I took an intensive driving safety training course. Safety is paramount: Alex prepared for the tour with a driving training course

team:Was there a moment during training when you had a lot of respect for the Tesla?
Alex: Definitely! Part of the training was an emergency braking at 50 km/h on a wet road. You really have to be careful there! But through such exercises I developed a good feeling for the Tesla. I now feel very well prepared for my drive through Europe.

team:Are you going on tour all by yourself?
Alex: No, I'm being accompanied by Dennis, who is currently a working student at RWE. He will be there on the whole tour with his camera and video camera and will report live. I'm sure there will be lots of exciting pictures and clips. He is studying film directing at a media university in Munich and is therefore super-suited for this task. Together we will then report on our tour on the Go & See blog.

team:Which stops on the tour are you most looking forward to?
Alex: Krakow and Warsaw - those are the two stops I'm particularly looking forward to. Because the topic there is solar energy.

team:Why do you find the topic of solar energy so interesting?
Alex: Because there is still so much potential in the area of solar energy for advancing the energy transition. It will certainly be exciting to find out on the tour directly on site what is still possible in terms of solar energy and what awaits us in the future. I am convinced that solar energy in combination with electric cars is a key technology for our energy future.

team:Why is it right and important to do a Go & See tour?
Alex: Much more is happening at RWE sites across Europe in terms of the future of energy than you know from your small circle of vapor at home. That's why the Go & See tour is right and important. It's a great way to publicize the exciting projects of the energy transition - and to do so directly from the scene of the action, which is what makes the tour so special.
