With Dr. Jörg Breitenbach, Dr. Henning-Arnd Müller and Dr. Monika Roth, three outstanding personalities were honored this week by being appointed honorary professors.

During a ceremony on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, three outstanding lecturers at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences (HWG LU) were honored by being awarded honorary professorships: Dr. Jörg Breitenbach, Dr. Henning-Arnd Müller and Dr. Monika Roth.

"This is an extraordinary event," said university president Prof. Dr. Gunther Piller at the kick-off, because the awarding of honorary professorships is rare and a special honor. "Dr. Monika Roth, Dr. Jörg Breitenbach and Dr. Henning-Arnd Müller - you are outstanding personalities who have earned honorary professorships, and the university is fortunate to have you teaching at HWG LU and providing valuable impetus here," the president said.

"What all three of you have in common is that you have been outstandingly committed to the subject area of health in teaching for many semesters and have supported the students in many ways," Prof. Dr. Eveline Häusler, Dean of the Department of Management, Controlling, HealthCare, then explained in her welcoming speech. Whether the focus of the honorary professorship is on management in the life sciences industry, on social and health law or on the management of integrated care, the topics are highly relevant for the design of high-quality, economically efficient and sustainable health care in any case, Häusler said. Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Dallmann, Dean of the Department of Social and Health Services, also emphasized the importance of dedicated lecturers for practice-oriented teaching at universities and thanked the three lecturers for contributing their expertise.

Dr. Jörg Breitenbach has been an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Management, Controlling, HealthCare since 2016. A chemist with a doctorate and an affinity for research, he is founder and managing director of BIT Pharma GmbH in Graz, Austria, and founder and managing director of IPSICO UG in Mannheim, Germany. Previously, Breitenbach spent many years in leading positions at Abbott Arzneimittel GmbH, among others, most recently as Chairman of the Supervisory Board. As a lecturer, he holds, among others, the lecture "Value Creation Management in the Healthcare Industry" and is available to students as a competent contact person for questions such as "Rare Diseases", "Costs of Drug Development" or "Effects of Intellectual Property Rights". At the Hackathon 2020, he supervised students in the challenge "Control of drug supply in pandemic situations". Within the department, he is actively involved in the development of a new master's program "International Healthcare Governance". Dr. Jörg Breitenbach is also closely associated with the university as a member of the university council.

"Dr. Breitenbach is excellently qualified for the honorary professorship," said laudator Prof. Dr. Elke Raum, summarizing Dr. Jörg Breitenbach's qualities and quoting University Council Chairman Dr. Dieter Wagner, who attests that the newly appointed honorary professor Breitenbach "will make a significant contribution to the university and strengthen its profile in the healthcare sector."

Dr. Henning-Arnd Müller has been a part-time lecturer at the university's Department of Social and Health Services since 2006. His main focus is on general social administrative law, the constitutional foundations of social law and social data protection. Dr. Henning-Arnd Müller has been the director of the Darmstadt Social Court since 2020. There, as Chairman of the 13th Chamber, he is responsible for health insurance law as well as rejection petitions. Since June 2021, Müller has also been Chairman of the 9th Chamber with responsibility for basic benefits for jobseekers.

In his laudation, Prof. Dr. Andreas Rein emphasized Henning-Arnd Müller's outstanding qualifications as a lecturer, his considerable list of publications and his great commitment to the welfare of students: "Dr. Müller is not only a colleague who is highly esteemed in scientific circles, but he also stands for a very special commitment to teaching, which he represents in an outstanding professional breadth. The fact that he is also a particularly competent judge and director of the second largest social court in Hesse uniquely combines legal practice with jurisprudential activity for the greatest possible benefit of the students," Rein quoted in conclusion from the expert opinion of Prof. Dr. Dr. Brettel of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

Dr. Monika Roth has been an active lecturer in the Department of Management, Controlling, HealthCare for ten years and teaches in the bachelor's degree program in Health Economics in the GiP Practice Network as well as in the master's degree program in Health Care Management - Healthcare Management (HCM). Since 2016, Dr. Monika Roth has been the full-time head of the "Corporate Development" division at Vinzentiushaus Offenburg GmbH, a large provider of assistance to senior citizens. Prior to that, she spent eight years as Head of Healthcare Management and Research at Gesundes Kinzigtal GmbH, a lighthouse project for integrated full-service healthcare in Germany.

"With her extensive practical experience and her research achievements, Dr. Roth pursues an interdisciplinary approach to teaching that is as application-oriented as it is research-based, which fits excellently into the profile of the department's health economics courses," explained Prof. Dr. Eveline Häusler in her laudatory speech. Dr. Roth regularly contributes his own innovative projects on highly relevant topics, such as cross-sector collaboration between nursing, medicine and therapeutic professions in the care of the elderly, data-based modeling of future regional care needs or the use of IT-supported assistance systems. In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Monika Roth made a significant contribution to the accreditation of the Master's degree program in Health Care Management - HCM as a Master of Science. Dr. Roth is also a role model in human terms due to her consistent thinking and acting in the interest of the common good. An example of this is the fact that she volunteered to work in the intensive care unit in the spring of 2020 at the height of the pandemic, when protective equipment was still in short supply and an effective vaccine was unpredictable - and did valuable work there as a trained specialist nurse in intensive care medicine.

For their outstanding commitment, Dr. Monika Roth has now been appointed honorary professor with a focus on "Management of Integrated Care", Dr. Jörg Breitenbach has been appointed honorary professor with a focus on "Management of Life Sciences Industry" and Dr. Henning-Arnd Müller has been appointed honorary professor with a focus on "Social and Health Law". The Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences congratulates very warmly on this special award and looks forward to further cooperation!
