Further growth in the field of midwifery science: Dr. Barbara Filsinger takes over professorship

The Department of Midwifery Science at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences (HWG LU) has further expert and knowledgeable support since July 2022: Dr. Barbara Filsinger received her certificate of appointment for the professorship "Obstetrics and Mother-Child Health" at the Department of Social and Health Services at the beginning of the month. Previously, Dr. Barbara Filsinger was assigned to fill in for the corresponding professorship. "With Dr. Barbara Filsinger, we have been able to attract a colleague with great expertise and a lot of practical experience in the field of gynecology, obstetrics and perinatology. She has a strong network and is a great asset to our team as well as to the entire university and the young discipline of midwifery," said a delighted Prof. Nina Knape, Ph.D., head of the program.

Barbara Filsinger, M.D., born in Bruchsal in 1965, studied human medicine at the universities of Erlangen and Freiburg, graduating in 1991. Dr. Barbara Filsinger obtained her specialist qualification in gynecology and obstetrics in 2000, and has been a perinatologist since 2004. In 2005, she received her doctorate with a thesis on the "Value of Axillary Sonography in Breast Cancer". Dr. Barbara Filsinger has been closely associated with the region since 2002: first as Managing Senior Physician at the Gynecological Clinic of the University Hospital Mannheim (2002-2005), then as Chief Physician of the Obstetrics Department at St. Marienkrankenhaus Ludwigshafen (2005-2016), as head of the perinatal center and medical director of the midwifery school of the Diakonissen-Stiftungskrankenhaus Speyer (2016-2019), and currently as senior physician at the gynecological clinic of the University Hospital Mannheim and head of the mother-child center there. In addition, the Ludwigshafen resident was a long-standing member and chair of the Perinatal Medicine Expert Commission of the external quality assurance SQ Med-Rheinlad-Pfalz, and a member of the "Round Table Obstetrics Rhineland-Palatinate" of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Labor, Health and Demography. Prof. Dr. Barbara Filsinger is associated with Ludwigshafen with the development of the "Guter Start ins Kinderleben" program. Together with the head of the city's youth welfare office, she contributed to the expansion of early help in Rhineland-Palatinate and throughout Germany as project coordinator. This was followed by studies in "Early Life Care" with a Master of Science degree at the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg. Currently, Barbara Filsinger is researching holistic and individualized forms of care during pregnancy with the help of digital media. In addition to medical topics, her teaching focuses on family health promotion and prevention.

About the dual bachelor's degree program in midwifery:
The dual bachelor's degree program in midwifery is a primary qualifying program and is aimed at all prospective students who want to learn the profession of midwifery. Prerequisite is a university entrance qualification (Abitur, Fachhochschulreife or a previous education recognized as equivalent) or a successfully completed vocational training in health care and nursing. The theoretical study phases take place at the university and are supplemented by practical learning units in modern equipped skills and simulation rooms. The practical study phases take place in alternation with the theoretical study phases at the clinical and non-clinical cooperation partners: These include practical assignments in the delivery room, the outpatient clinic for pregnant women, the postpartum ward and the pediatric clinic, as well as out-of-hospital assignments with freelance midwives, in birth centers or midwifery practices. Students receive remuneration throughout their studies.

The seven-semester course of study will replace training at midwifery schools in the future as a result of the 2019 amendment to the Midwives Act in the course of the academization of the health professions: These may start for the last time in 2022 with a midwifery training course. From 2023, midwifery as a profession can only be learned at colleges and universities. The midwifery science program concludes with the academic degree of Bachelor of Science and a state license to practicemidwifery.

The dual bachelor's degree program in midwifery science always starts in Ludwigshafen in the winter semester. An application for the winter semester 2023/2024 at the HWG LU is possible from May 2023; an application to the practice partners after receipt of the preliminary admission certificate is expected until mid-June 2023.
