Life situations and experiences of LGBTQI* in health and social care institutions.

Project Management:Prof. Dr. Regina Brunnett
Project duration:May - November 2017
Project description:

LSBTQI* refers to the heterogeneous group of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people. In recent years, research in Germany has begun to address the concerns and needs of LGBTQI*. Life situations, interests, social situations and psychosocial problems differ considerably within the group.

The quality of health care and social services for LGBTQI* in Germany is partly reduced, often due to insecurities and problems on the part of the employees as well as institutional barriers in health and social care facilities. This favors discrimination and exclusion, which is not compatible with requirements for diversity-oriented and high-quality health care as well as needs-oriented care in social institutions.

The lecture and the subsequent workshop aim first of all to provide basic and background knowledge. An introductory lecture on LGBTQI*/queer theory with reference to practice is intended to create a common basis. Subsequently, the workshop will discuss and thereby raise awareness based on short inputs that focus on the professional fields of nursing/midwifery and social work. From this, impulses for practical work are to be gained and the participants' awareness of diversity with regard to sexuality- and gender-related categories is to be expanded.

Target groups:Students, employees and teachers of the university, citizens of the city of Ludwigshafen, counseling centers for LGBTQI* in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, nursing schools, hospitals, geriatric care facilities, social and health care facilities in the surrounding area.
Diversity dimension:Expanding the consideration of sexual orientation and gender identity in health and social care facilities.
