German-French meeting at the wine campus Neustadt

After long months of the Corona pandemic and the associated restrictions, the students of the Franco-German Masters in Viticulture and Oenology, offered in cooperation with the Université de Haute-Alsace in Colmar, finally get to come together and enjoy two weeks of presence together. Visiting the region and discovering the Palatine culture are not to be missed. An online info session for prospective students will be held on June 23.

The presence weeks were supposed to take place around the Franco-German Day on January 22, but they had to be postponed due to the Corona pandemic. Unfortunately, face-to-face study for French students in Neustadt was also not possible this summer semester and was replaced by online teaching. "We are very happy to finally welcome the students of the first year of the Franco-German Master's program at the Weincampus Neustadt. Such a binational study program thrives on encounters and intercultural exchange, so it was important for us to organize these attendance weeks before the end of the semester. Fortunately, the last Corona loosenings allowed it," explains program director Prof. Dr. Maren Scharfenberger-Schmeer.

In addition to lectures, laboratories and exercises in the subjects "Innovations in Oenology", "Innovations in the Chemistry and Microbiology of Wine", "Special Sensory Analysis / Consumer Research" and "Smart & sustainable viticulture", a social program is offered to promote getting to know each other in the cohort and discovering Palatine culture. The program includes a guided tour of the historic Schlossgasse in Hambach an der Weinstraße. On June 14, the students will be invited by the German-French Society of Neustadt to a guided tour of Neustadt's old town. Following the appointment, the group will be welcomed by the mayor Stefan Ulrich in the Neustadt town hall. Culture also plays a major role in the curriculum: as part of the course "History and Culture of Wine on the Upper Rhine", the students will visit the Villa Rustica in Ungstein, Speyer Cathedral, the Peasants' War House in Nußdorf and Hambach Castle on June 15 to discuss the relationship between man and the vine since its cultivation in Neolithic times and to study the history of the Palatinate.

Funding by the Franco-German Civic Fund
The attendance weeks and the cultural program from June 7-18 are supported by the Franco-German Civic Fund. The Franco-German Civic Fund was launched on January 22, 2019, by the German and French governments through the Treaty of Aachen. It "supports citizens' initiatives and associations, town and regional partnerships, foundations or actors from the social economy, education and science in the service of Franco-German friendship and a living Europe."

Cross-border master's degree program: applications still possible until July 15
Those interested in the master's degree in viticulture and oenology can apply for the winter semester 2021/2022 until July 15, 2021. As a cross-border course of study, the German-French Master's program in Viticulture and Oenology started in September 2020. The aim is to train the future generation of European wine experts for the wine industry, wine research and the tasks of professional education and administration. The program is divided into four semesters and three practical phases, which are completed in wineries, and concludes with a double degree (German and French Master of Science Viticulture & Oenology). Two internships and one study semester take place in France. Thanks to an intensive language course in the first semester, interested students with little knowledge of French or German are able to start their studies. Language acquisition and Franco-German exchange are promoted throughout the program through joint tandem courses, excursions and meetings.

The Master's program in Viticulture and Oenology is aimed at national and international Bachelor's graduates  in viticulture and oenology as well as in agricultural, natural and engineering sciences. For the stay in France, each student receives a grant of 300 €/month from the Franco-German University. No tuition fees are charged.
