As part of European Mobility Week 2025, various local political representatives from Kaiserslautern, Ludwigshafen, Mannheim, Heidelberg and Speyer undertook a cycle tour on September 19, which led from Kaiserslautern to Heidelberg. The aim was to think about cycling across municipal boundaries, to network better and to get to know municipal cycling projects.
In the early afternoon, after covering around 60 of the 100 kilometers, the tour made a stop at the HWG LU and was welcomed there by university president Prof. Dr. Gunther Piller. Over snacks and cool drinks, Alexander Thewalt, Head of the Ludwigshafen Building and Environment Department and Gunther Piller talked about the future project "Umweltverbundbrücke".
This project, which is intended to connect the Ernst-Boehe-Straße campus directly with the main railway station as a bridge over railroad tracks, would not only ensure the long-awaited direct connection of the university and the entire district to the city center, but would also serve as an exemplary concept for a low-barrier crossing and better networking of pedestrian and bicycle traffic with public transport in the Rhine-Neckar region.
