At the beginning of July, the time had come again: together with 28 other teams, the HWG LU took part in the 16th church boat regatta in Speyer. A mixed team of university management, teaching staff and administrative employees provided its dedicated fans with a race with everything that goes with it: excitement, team spirit and a dose of adventure.
The first race was approached tactically and cautiously - with a very respectable time in a solid midfield. In the second race, the team ambitiously aimed for a place in the top 10 with full power and a clear course. Up to the halfway point, everything went as planned: strong technique, good rhythm, impressive team performance.
Then came the unexpected turning point: at low tide, the boat unfortunately got stuck on a rock and was damaged. Three team members dropped out and it was no longer possible to improve the time.
Nevertheless, the performance remains remarkable. Commitment, team spirit and fighting spirit were clearly noticeable and will certainly be demonstrated again next year.
A big thank you to everyone who was there - in the boat and as a supporter on the shore!
Our final result:
- Great 4th place out of 12 mixed teams (at least 4 women)
- Overall (men's, mixed and women's boats): 15th place out of 29 teams
Background: The church boat regatta has been held every year since 2008 at the end of June/beginning of July in the Old Harbour in Speyer and is organized by the Speyer 1883 e.V. rowing club. A total of 29 teams took part this year, competing against each other in two identical boats in an ingenious system.
