Ludwigshafen University successful with joint application to federal-state initiative "Innovative University

The Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences (HWG LU) is among the 55 universities selected for funding in the second round of the federal-state initiative "Innovative University" witha joint application on the topic "EMPOWER - Living Cooperation and Shaping Innovation". The transfer alliance - consisting of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Mainz Catholic University of Applied Sciences, Bingen University of Applied Sciences, Worms University of Applied Sciences and HWG LU, including the Center for Quality Development and Assurance at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz - is expected to receive funding totaling approximately €13.4 million for the five-year funding period starting in early 2023.

The federal-state initiative "Innovative University" to promote the research-based transfer of ideas, knowledge and technology is intended to support universities of applied sciences and smaller universities in strengthening their strategic role in the regional innovation system. The funding initiative was implemented in two selection rounds. Universities already funded in the first selection round as well as universities not previously funded were now able to participate in the second selection round (from 2023 to 2027). The federal and state governments are providing a total of up to 285 million euros for the second round of funding.

Together with five other universities in Rhineland-Palatinate, HWG LU submitted the joint application "EMPOWER - Living Cooperation and Shaping Innovation" for review. This application has now been selected for funding in an expert-led competitive process from among 163 universities submitting applications.

The central goals of the cross-university transfer alliance EMPOWER are, in the sense of an agile future-oriented knowledge transfer, to live cooperations regionally and supraregionally and to develop innovations. This is to be initiated and sustainably implemented in joint transformation processes with already existing external network partners, especially in Rheinhessen/Vorderpfalz. Another focus of the EMPOWER transfer alliance is aimed inward. The aim is to establish an overarching network of the participating universities in a transfer hub in order to facilitate knowledge and competencies for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary issues and problem solutions of different disciplines.

The transfer alliance consists of the University of Applied Sciences Mainz, the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Mainz, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Bingen, the University of Applied Sciences Worms as well as the HWG LU under inclusion of the Center for Quality Development and Assurance of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Within the framework of the complex interdisciplinary project, HWG LU is focusing on the topic of "NEW WORK", initiated and led by Prof. Dr. Jutta Rump, Director of the renowned Institute for Employment and Employability IBE at Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences. Prof. Dr. Rainer Völker from the university-affiliated Institute for Management and Innovation IMI and Andrea Kuhn from the Research Network Health are also involved. HWG LU is also networked with the other universities in the network in the subject areas of "HEALTH" by Prof. Dr. Esther Berkemer and Prof. Dr. Monika Greening (Department of Social and Health Services) and "CYBER SECURITY" by Prof. Dr. Haio Röckle (Department of Services and Consulting), among others.

The start of the project with a planned funding period of five years is scheduled for the beginning of 2023. The requested funding volume of the overall application/transfer alliance over this term amounts to approximately € 13.4 million, of which HWG LU is expected to receive just under € 3.2 million in funding according to the application.
