The international nursing community met this week at the 30th ICN Congress in Helsinki (June 9-13). More than 7,000 nurses from 136 nations from all over the world came together. New, ground-breaking definitions of nursing and nurses were also published, the tenor of which is: "The new definition is a declaration - a global compass that reclaims and renews the essence and potential of nursing. Grounded in disciplinary knowledge, ethical standards, and human connection, it affirms nursing as a science-based, people-centered, and socially just profession." (ICN 11.06.2025, https://www.icn.ch/news/icns-new-definition-nurse-and-nursing-global-milestone-professional-identity). Self-governance is also an essential component of the international professional self-image, as can be read in the new definitions. The nurses were enthusiastic; there were standing ovations.
Also present in Helsinki was Dr. Andrea Kuhn, who heads the Health Research Network at the HWG LU and whose work was presented in Helsinki with the poster "German nursing boards - Nurses independently create their first own binding professional code of conduct".
