Neustadt wine campus under the sign of Franco-German friendship

Around the Franco-German Day on January 22, the Neustadt Wine Campus invited the French students of the Franco-German Master's program in Viticulture & Oenology to Neustadt for two joint study weeks. The goal: to bring the students of both countries closer together and thus set a sign for the German-French friendship. But the Corona pandemic decided otherwise: The January event had to be cancelled and the lectures held online. Therefore, the welcome of the students from France by Mayor Weigel will not take place until the summer semester, as soon as the Corona situation allows it until then.

"Since in the first semester of the master's program German and French students study at their respective home universities - the Weincampus Neustadt and the Université de Haute-Alsace in Colmar-, we have organized this first meeting so that both groups can get to know each other before the French students come to Neustadt in the summer semester to study together," explains program director Prof. Dr. Maren Scharfenberger-Schmeer. "The time around January 22 seemed particularly suitable to us, as this day is a symbol of Franco-German friendship." The classroom sessions were scheduled for January 18-29, 2021. A social program was to enable students to meet outside the university and strengthen the sense of togetherness within the cohort.

Financed by the Franco-German Civic Fund
In addition to courses, laboratory work and excursions, a guided tour of the old town and the historic Schlossgasse in Hambach, a film screening at the Roxy cinema and, last but not least, a welcome by Mayor Marc Weigel at Neustadt town hall were also planned. The courses now take place online and the supporting program, which has received financial support from the newly established Franco-German Civic Fund, has been moved to the summer semester. "I welcome the introduction of the German-French study program by the Weincampus Neustadt and especially the cooperation with our Alsatian neighbors, because especially in the field of viticulture there are many similarities between our two regions. Through such projects we come closer and Europe grows together. I regret that I will not be able to meet the students personally on the occasion of the Franco-German Day, but I am already looking forward to a catch-up date as soon as the situation allows," emphasizes Mayor Marc Weigel.

Cross-border Master's program: applications now open
Anyone interested in the German-French Master's in Viticulture & Oenology can apply for the winter semester 2021/2022 now and until July 15, 2021. The German-French Master Viticulture & Oenologie started in September 2020 at the Weincampus Neustadt and at the Université de Haute-Alsace in Colmar as a cross-border study program. The program, which leads to a double-degree Master of Science degree, is divided into attendance phases at both universities and a total of three practical phases, which are completed in winegrowing businesses on the Upper Rhine (including Switzerland). Two internships are obligatory in a company and a region of the language to be learned. Through the studies and the practical projects in two or three countries, students acquire solid language and intercultural skills as well as key competencies such as  communication skills, teamwork skills and flexibility. Language courses are held at the beginning of the program to prepare students for their stay at the partner university and to enable those with little knowledge of French or German to get started. The program receives a grant of 1.5 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the Interreg Upper Rhine program. About the Franco-German Civic Fund
The Franco-German Civic Fund was launched by the German and French governments on January 22, 2019, with the Treaty of Aachen. The Treaty of Aachen aims to reaffirm and deepen the cooperation between the two countries, which began with the 1963 Elysée Treaty. The Citizens' Fund has a budget of 2.4 million euros and "supports citizens' initiatives and associations, town and regional partnerships, foundations or actors from the social economy, education and science in the service of Franco-German friendship and a living Europe." About Franco-German Day
On January 22, 1963, German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and President Charles de Gaulle signed the Elysée Treaty on Franco-German cooperation. The treaty, which was to become one of the most significant steps on the road to reconciliation between the former "hereditary enemies," provided, among other things, for the establishment of the Franco-German Youth Office (DFJW). Forty years later, in 2003, German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and President Jacques Chirac established the first Franco-German Day. Every year since then, January 22 has been dedicated to Franco-German friendship. On January 22, 2019, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed the close cooperation between the two countries with the Treaty of Aachen.

The Neustadt Wine Campus is a joint scientific institution of the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences (lead), the Bingen University of Applied Sciences and the Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences together with the DLR Rheinpfalz.
