Internship semester abroad

Are you planning to complete your mandatory semester abroad as an internship with a company or public institution in a country of the CEE/CIS region?

The following information should support you in the preparation and follow-up of the internship abroad and facilitate the recognition of your semester abroad.

The mandatory semester abroad usually takes place in the 6th semester in the IME degree program. In order for your mandatory semester abroad to be recognized, you must complete some formalities before and after the practical semester abroad.

Before the practical semester abroad


You must fulfill the following minimum requirements:

  • Participation in the seminar Semester Abroad (all dates).
  • Proof of passing all module exams of the first three study semesters
  • English B2 proof
  • Russian A1 proof
  • Application for approval of internship abroad

-       Select topic of the internship report and coordinate with the module representative

-       Fill out application form

-       Attach internship contract

-       Submit to the department at least 4 weeks before the start of the internship semester

-       Approval by the internship officer in the department

After the practical semester abroad


You must complete the following formalities for recognition of the semester abroad:

  • Proof of internship activity: a certificate from the internship site stating the nature and duration (start/end) of the activity and the areas of work completed.
    The duration of the internship shall be at least 20 complete calendar weeks without interruption. The scope of work shall be at least 20 working hours per week and the activity shall take place in particular in the following working areas:

-       Management (esp. Strategic/International).

-       Marketing/Sales

-       Market research/market communication

-       Human Resources and Organization

-       Procurement/Logistics

-       Controlling

  • Written documentation: a two-part practical report of at least 20 DIN A-4 pages:

-       a field report of at least 5 pages, usually in English

-       an elaboration of a subject-specific topic of at least 15 pages

-       Deadline for submission: no later than the 1st week of lectures of the following semester to the assistant of the department

-       Form: in bound print version

  • Presentation (incl. an electronic version) about the practical semester abroad in the context of a block course in the following semester
  • Presentation of the completed questionnaire about the semester abroad
  • Application for recognition of the practical semester abroad

All documents both before and after the practical semester abroad must be submitted to the department.

Please, pay attention to the application deadlines for internship programs, grants, etc. as well as those for the practical semester abroad in International Affairs. These can be found on the pages of the department.
