The master's program "Innovative Care Practice in Nursing and Midwifery" at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences is application-oriented and geared to the complex requirements in a dynamically developing professional field.

Against the background of increasing quality requirements, the establishment of new tasks for the professions of nursing and midwifery and the associated need for cooperation as well as interdisciplinary and professional collaboration, the consecutive master's degree program "Innovative Care Practice in Nursing and Midwifery" aims to qualify students for care design in the outpatient, inpatient sector and in inter- and transsectoral care.

In the elective area , students have the opportunity to set their own focal points in their studies. Among other things, they can choose between the life phases "old age" and "pregnancy, birth, postpartum, breastfeeding and early childhood".

At the heart of the program is a one-semester practical project in which knowledge acquired in the course of study is implemented and reflected upon in practice. It is carried out in a health care facility/accompanied by a freelance midwife and is intensively supervised by both the midwife and the university lecturers. The university accompanies the practical project with professional support and offers for reflection.

The Master's program aims to enable students and prospective students to study at an individual pace. With this in mind, the course is offered both full-time and as a part-time course.

The full-time course of studies is only compatible with a significantly limited professional activity. The part-time part-time study program makes sense for you whenever you expect to need more than 3 semesters for your studies. This means that individual study is made possible. You will find further information under "Structure".

The application-oriented master's program Innovative Care Practice in Nursing and Midwifery aims to acquire knowledge about processes of implementing concepts and measures in health care facilities, about the implementation of cross-sectoral concepts and their social and organizational framework. In addition, knowledge of methods in the areas of research, management and cooperation is acquired. The acquired competencies are tested and closely supervised in a practical project.

Thus, students acquire the competence to implement method-, knowledge- and research-based concepts and measures (e.g. instruments, standards, guidelines) in health care institutions/fields of action in the liberal profession. They are able to implement cross-sectoral concepts and to design accompanying processes.

The study program imparts competencies for diversity-sensitive care design. By acquiring competencies in networking and cooperation, the course qualifies students for coordinating activities.

Upon successful completion, graduates are awarded the academic degree "Master of Arts (M.A.)" with 120 credit points (ECTS).
The degree program qualifies graduates for the following fields of activity, for example:

in the field of nursing

  • method- and research-based implementation of concepts, standards and guidelines
  • management of interprofessional projects and teams
  • staff positions for nursing development
  • Quality assurance and development in the inpatient and outpatient sector
  • Development and implementation of cross-sectoral care concepts
  • Professional policy fields of work

in midwifery

  • method- and research-based implementation of concepts, standards and guidelines
  • management of interprofessional projects and teams
  • Department management (delivery room, maternity ward, obstetric outpatient clinic)
  • (Leading) activity in networks for obstetric care
  • Quality assurance and development in the inpatient and outpatient sector
  • Development and implementation of cross-sectoral care concepts
  • professional political fields of work

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded the academic degree "Master of Arts (M.A.)".

The completion of the Master's program opens up the possibility for graduates to pursue a doctorate.

Structure full-time studies

The program is designed as a 4-semester full-time study program.

The application-oriented master's program imparts theoretical and methodological knowledge in four qualification strands:

  1. Research in practice
  2. Implementation of concepts
  3. Implementation of concepts in a social context
  4. Theory-practice transfer (compulsory elective)

In a total of 9 modules, personal, social, methodological and subject-specific competencies can be acquired at master's level:

In the compulsory elective area, students have the opportunity to set their own focal points in their studies. Among other things, they can choose between the life phases "old age" and "pregnancy, birth, postpartum, lactation and early childhood" .

The core of the study program is a one-semester practical project in a health care facility/accompanied by a freelance midwife, which is completed as an internship. The university accompanies the practical project with professional support and offers for reflection.

Structure of part-time part-time study program

The part-time M.A. program is divided into eight modules plus a master's thesis. The program, like the full-time program, comprises 120 ECTS.

The modules form self-contained study units that lead to partial qualifications related to the respective study objective. Modules are completed within one semester. In the part-time study program, two different formats are combined, e.g. block seminars and online teaching.
