East Asia Institute: Conference on Inflation and Deflation in East Asia

On Friday, 20.5.2022, the 5th Ludwigshafen Currency Conference took place in the rooms of the East Asia Institute. Nine renowned speakers from five countries examined the topic of "Inflation and Deflation in East Asia" from different angles. For example, the susceptibility of the Bank of Japan and the European Central Bank to political pressure was compared from a legal perspective.  Further, the reasons why inflation rates have remained historically low in Korea and Japan despite years of monetary easing were explored. The speakers from Singapore and Taiwan impressively showed how much their open economies depend on global influences. Finally, the analysis of inflationary episodes in China's recent history highlighted the political explosive power of uncontrolled price increases.

Overall, the contributions provided valuable insights into the causes and consequences of the current global rise in inflation.
