Career Center of the university under new management: Iwana Hübner in interview

Since the beginning of May 2020, the Career Center of HWG LU has been under new management: Iwana Hübner, born in 1987,  now supports students, graduates and alumni in all questions concerning applications and career entry. A master's degree in business psychology & Change Management, work in management development at BASF SE, training as a systemic consultant, and several years of experience as a job coach and measure coordinator at various educational institutions are what the 33-year-old brings to her new position. In the following interview, Iwana Hübner introduces herself in more detail to the university public:

Ms. Hübner, you have now been the director of the university-affiliated Career Center at HWG LU since May 2020. Did you have a good start despite the Corona-related restrictions?
I. Hübner: Yes thank you very much, I had a very good start, even if it was a bit unusual. On my first day, for example, we met three of us at the university, observing the distance regulations, and after a few technical teething troubles, further familiarization then took place via Zoom. But that worked out very well.

What are the responsibilities of your new position?
I support students and graduates of the university in their career entry, e.g. in the form of application checks, career coaching, preparation for job interviews or finding a suitable mentor. I also plan workshops on in-demand topics such as salary negotiations or applying for jobs in English. Then I also maintain the Career Portal, where new job ads are posted daily and companies and students come together.

What particularly appeals to you about the new position?
The attraction for me is that, on the one hand, I am in direct contact with the students and support them and, on the other hand, I can further develop the Career Center's portfolio in line with their needs.

What are the first goals you have set for yourself?
One big goal is for the Career Center to become even more present, especially among students at the university's other campuses. I would also like to breathe more life back into the mentoring program, as I consider this opportunity to be very valuable and would have liked something like this myself when I was a student.

What did you do professionally before taking up your post in Ludwigshafen?
Before taking office, I worked for several years as a job coach, helping people with multiple placement barriers to improve their chances of integration into the labor market. Most recently, I coordinated a refugee measure with the aim of improving participants' language skills and placing them in employment subject to social insurance contributions.

Why did you choose HWG LU?
Having worked with socially disadvantaged people for years, access to education, equal opportunities, mutual respect and appreciation are extremely important to me. That's why I completely identify with the university's mission statement and was eager to become part of this great institution.

Thank you very much for the interview!
