"License to Transmit" - now it really works

Worldwide communication, technical know-how and an exciting leisure activity - these are the key words to characterize the hobby of "amateur radio", which has now also found its way into the HWG LU.

Inspired by Prof. Dr. Andreas Gissel, who himself is active as a radio amateur under the callsign "DL3YM", and with the professional support of the Amateur-Radio-Club Ludwigshafen e.V., students, alumni and employees of the university have been meeting once a week since the beginning of the year for a joint amateur radio training course, which was successfully completed on 17.06.2025 with the examination at the responsible authority, the Federal Network Agency in Eschborn.

With Natalie Stuka, Andreas Papanikos and Peter Heidemann (pictured from left to right, photo: Daniel Mittendorf), three other members of the university and alumni now have an amateur radio license alongside Prof. Gissel - the "driver's license" for international radio communication on the amateur radio bands*). Another member of the university is about to take the license exam and is expected to do so in August. In order to document the common location at the HWG to the outside world, the newly formed amateur radio group has now also applied for its own club callsign "DA0LU", which will represent the university location Ludwigshafen on the radio waves on special occasions.

The HWG amateur radio group is open to all members of the university who are interested in this fascinating and global technical hobby. It is planned to offer training courses to prepare for the amateur radio license exam at the HWG LU in the future.

Anyone interested in amateur radio is welcome to contact Prof. Gissel(andreas.gissel@ 8< SPAM protection, please remove >8 hwg-lu.de) at any time and can find more information HERE.

*) By the way: Amateur radio should not be confused with "CB radio": While CB radio is a simple, license-free system for short-range use, amateur radio, as a technologically sophisticated international radio service, requires official approval and in-depth knowledge.
