From March 1 to April 14, the exhibition "Kofferkinder" can be seen in the Social Innovation Lab of the HWG LU, Bismarckstr. 55, 67059 Ludwigshafen, an event organized by Kultur Rhein Neckar e.V. in cooperation with Social Innovation Lab and the Equal Opportunities Office of the HWG LU
The exhibition KOFFERKIND by Fatma Biber-Born deals artistically with the fate of children left behind, so-called "Kofferkinder", whose parents came to Germany as guest workers in the 1960s and 1970s. The children often stayed behind with grandparents, aunts, uncles or neighbors in their home country. They grew up without parents. A fate shared by an estimated 700,000 children of Turkish guest workers.
Biber-Born met some of the "suitcase children" of the time, talked to them about their experiences and collected pictures from their childhood. Inspired by these images, she has captured the children's fates in watercolor and ink in nine paintings. Short impressions and quotes from the interviews Biber-Born conducted with the 45-60-year-olds are presented behind transparent paper (text flags) in the room.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of other events on the topic, including storytelling cafés, talks with the artist, readings, a concert and the expert discussion "Forgotten children - pedagogical and political implications" on 22.03.2024 from 13.00, moderated by Prof. Dr. Jörg Reitzig from the Department of Social and Health Care and with inputs from Silva Burrini, Hasan Dewran, Sladjana Krebs and Gülcin Wilhelm, as well as a discussion with city councillors Romina Dimov (SPD), MdL Marion Schneid (CDU) and Ibrahim Yetkin (Die Grünen im Rat).
