Insurances during the internship abroad

Students who complete an internship abroad must ensure that they have sufficient insurance coverage. Clarify with the company/institution in advance whether accident and/or liability insurance coverage exists for you or whether you have to take care of it yourself.

EU incl. Turkey
during your internship abroad within the EU (incl. Turkey) you are automatically covered by health insurance in these countries via the European  health card of your substitute health insurance fund if you do not receive any remuneration. You will receive the usual national benefits there. Your health insurance will tell you what these are and whether additional private health insurance abroad is advisable.

If you receive an internship allowance, you automatically fall under the insurance obligation of the host country, i.e. the host country/company decides on the insurance obligation; the state of residence principle does not apply in this case. Please contact your health insurance in Germany if and under which circumstances your health insurance in Germany can be suspended for the duration of your internship abroad without any disadvantages for you.

outside EU and Turkey
For all countries outside this region you have to take out a private health insurance abroad. An additional international health insurance is also recommended for internships and study stays within the EU and Turkey, because the national KVs do not include the case of return transport or special treatment.

Please check with your private liability insurance to see to what extent damage you cause during stays abroad is covered.

During an internship abroad, you are not covered by accident insurance through the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society. Please insure yourself privately before you go abroad.

Students who are supported by an Erasmus scholarship, a Promos scholarship or a DAAD scholarship can take out combined health, accident and personal liability insurance through the DAAD.

However, please note that the principle of residence no longer applies to health insurance within the EU.
