Health economics in the service of patient-oriented care

HWG graduate takes part in renowned Value-Based Healthcare seminar at TU Berlin

Once again, Marcella Eierdanz, a graduate of HWG LU's health economics degree programs, has qualified to take part in the renowned VBHC (Value-Based Healthcare) seminar at TU Berlin. In order to ensure a high standard, participation in this seminar, which is now in its fifth year, is subject to admisson requirements.

From October 6 to 10, 2025, around 40 participants from various areas of the healthcare sector - from hospital management and health insurance companies to start-ups and researchers - came together to jointly develop concepts for sustainable, patient-oriented care. Marcella Eierdanz, M.Sc. Healthcare Management and now responsible for the management of the dual bachelor's degree in Health Economics in Practice (GiP) at the HWG LU, raves about the great experience of being able to work in this group.

The seminars focused on the question of how the German healthcare system can be aligned more closely with the actual benefits for patients. The discussions highlighted the urgent challenge facing the German healthcare system: with over 1700 hospital locations, it is almost impossible to provide high-quality care across the board. In many places, treatment is not provided in the right place - a structural problem that is exacerbated by a lack of transparency and incentives.

A central topic of the seminar was the relevance of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). This patient-centered outcome data should be systematically established in the healthcare system in order to measure and improve the actual benefit of medical services.

In addition, there were calls for the creation of a legal basis to enable the mandatory publication of healthcare data. Only through transparency and economic incentives can real quality improvements be achieved in the healthcare system. The provocative but honest question was posed: "Do we first have to drive the system into the wall so that it can then be completely rebuilt and improved?"

The seminar benefited from well-founded impulses and experience reports from top-class speakers from science, hospital management and industry. The focus was on practice-oriented cases for successful value-based approaches such as the Martini-Klinik Hamburg, the University Hospital Basel in cooperation with Roche or (also) the medical technology company Stryker.

The VBHC seminar showed: The need for change became clear; what is needed now is a consistent legal framework, courageous decisions and a common focus on the actual added value for patients.

"The health economics degree programs at HWG LU specifically support students in participating in such innovative health science and health economics offerings and, of course, place the relevant specialist topics in the degree programs. Bachelor Health Economics (GiP) and Master Healthcare Management (HCM). As part of my HCM master's degree, value-based healthcare approaches have already been taken up, so I was able to contribute and expand my knowledge in the seminar. I became aware of the seminar through the extensive network of GiP and HCM graduates and am now looking forward to passing on the expertise I have gained to the network and our practice partners," summarized Marcella Eierdanz. Special thanks go to the Förderverein Gesundheitsökonomie an der Hochschule Ludwigshafen e.V., which made participation possible through financial support.

The Health Economics Talks at the HWG LU also discuss current topics from the healthcare sector in a professional and expert manner and bring together decision-makers from all areas of healthcare, politics and science. The Health Economics Talks 2025 will be held under the motto"Future Care - Work On Progress" and will take place on November 14, 2025 at the HWG LU.
