To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (LUBS) , the International Department, together with the Transatlantic Institute, is offering an international lecture series with special partner universities. On June 17th, 2021 the guest lecture of the University of West Florida (UWF) took place:
Ms. Melissa Brode, as deputy dean and director of the graduate programs of the UWF College for Business, gave an overview of the long-term cooperation and especially the orientation of the successful MBA program with the Transatlantic Institute. The UWF, which was founded in 1963, currently has five academic colleges and has a large number of bachelor's and master's degrees as well as doctoral programs. The Transatlantic Institute of LUBS, under the direction of Prof. Gerhard Raab as managing director and the associate director Kathrin Paul, maintains a long-term partnership with the UWF, which is kept alive with many mutual visits.
The presentation of the university was followed by an exciting financial lecture by Prof. Dr. Kwan-Chen Ma (Professor of Finance) on “How to Pick the Next Facebook?” The lecture examined the interplay between business strategy and perfomance of equity stock. In the context of investment banking, the question arises how an outperformers can be identified at an early stage so that a cheap investment is still possible. Prof. Ma compared the price development of stock corporations listed on the stock exchange or listed in major indices with the importance of their innovative business models to the competition companies and which growth prospects are discernible. In doing so, Prof. Ma and his students have compiled interesting criteria. In addition to well-known features such as "disruptive" business ideas or "first mover" considerations of the business model, a "de facto" monopoly and the approaches "bully- powerful enough to annoy others" are also criteria for discovering the next outperformer. In a dialogical lecture style, Prof. Dr. Ma integrated the listeners who brought in some ideas and questions.
We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Kwan-Chen Ma and Ms. Melissa Brode for their participation in the lecture series and look forward to continuing this format.
The international lecture series is part of the “EPTRAC – Experience and Passion in Transatlantic Relations and Collaboration” project funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the “IVAC – International Virtual Academic Collaboration” funding program. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports the “IVAC – International Virtual Academic Collaboration” program with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
