HWG LU expands its portfolio with a new Bachelor's degree program / High demand and excellent career prospects

The Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (HWG LU) has started the 2023/24 winter semester with a new Bachelor's degree course in Business Psychology. The number of applicants shows that the new course has met with lively demand: Almost 600 applications were received for the originally planned 35 study places. The first cohort, which started at the beginning of the semester in September, was ultimately 40 strong.

"The Bachelor's degree course in Business Psychology is designed to address the critical and growing needs of business and society in a rapidly changing world. Given these dynamics, it is essential that we understand not only the business aspects, but also the psychological processes behind human behavior in business contexts. This is where our new degree program in Business Psychology comes in," said Prof. Dr. Klaus Blettner at the opening ceremony last Thursday.

Launch of the degree programs in just 18 months

The Dean of the Department of Marketing and Human Resource Management was delighted with the small success story that the new degree program has already achieved. Blettner was referring not only to the great response from applicants, but also to the fact that his department was able to launch the new program in a very short time. There were just 18 months between the idea and the start of the course - "lightning speed by university standards".

The other speakers explained why the new degree program is already enjoying such great popularity at the start: Prof. Dr. Ullrich Günther from Leuphana University Lüneburg, who is considered a pioneer for business psychology degree programs in Germany, contributed the keynote speech to the opening ceremony and spoke about the development and prospects of his field. For him, a university of applied sciences (HAW) is the right place to study in order to do justice to the complexity of business psychology, which he attributes not least to the practical relevance of the lecturers. Ullrich Günther promised the invited students of the first cohort perspectives on various levels and appealed to them not only to focus on the subject matter during their new studies, but also to use this important phase of personal development to develop values and social orientation.

Excellent prospects for prospective business psychologists

The fact that business psychology is a very exciting field and that human behavior in an economic context cannot always be explained rationally was subsequently demonstrated by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Raab in his inspiring lecture. The expert in the field of neuroeconomics and consumer psychology at the HWG LU used practical examples and findings to show in a sometimes astonishing way how consumer behavior can be better classified and applied to business management.

All speakers agreed on one thing: with a Bachelor's degree in Business Psychology, students will be in high demand on the job market and have excellent prospects in companies and social organizations. Conversely, an application-oriented degree in psychology in the context of business administration is a valuable and promising addition to the portfolio of HWG LU with its focus on business administration, social and health care. "The establishment of this new degree program marks an important milestone in the development of our university and reflects our constant efforts to create excellent and contemporary educational opportunities for our students," said Klaus Blettner.

Studying Business Psychology at the HWG LU

The new degree programs in Business Psychology (B.Sc.) at the HGW LU combines the sciences of psychology and business and offers students a sound and practical education. Comprehensive methodological training as well as social and intercultural skills round off the general business content and psychological knowledge. In addition, students at the HGW LU have access to an excellently equipped behavioral science research laboratory. The HWG LU is the first state university in Rhineland-Palatinate to offer a degree course in business psychology; courses start in the winter and summer semesters.
