Science up close: The behavioral science laboratory at Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences

What does it feel like to be old? Students on the Business Psychology degree programs at Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences have the opportunity to explore this question in an impressive way in the "Experimental and Apparative Methods" course. Together with course director Prof. Dr. Cao, the students tested an age simulation suit in the winter semester of 2024 that makes the physical challenges of old age tangible.

A short video about the project shows how movements in everyday life are influenced by the suit and the exciting insights that can be gained. The behavioral science laboratory is an innovative learning space that enables practical work and is available to students at Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences.

An indispensable foundation for your entire degree course.

    • Fundamentals of mathematics and statistics

      6 ECTS

Numbers, data, facts - but with brains! Here you will learn the mathematical and statistical tools that you really need in the field of business psychology: from differential calculus to data analysis. You'll be surprised how much math there is in everyday working life.

    • Fundamentals of economics and psychology

      12 ECTS

Understanding people, shaping markets. This broad introductory module combines marketing, HR management, business psychology and soft skills in one. You will learn what drives people, how organizations work and how you can develop your own communication and personality - the perfect start to your business psychology degree.

    • Value-oriented corporate management

      9 ECTS

How do figures become decisions? You will immerse yourself in the world of bookkeeping, cost accounting and financing. You will learn how to read annual financial statements, evaluate investments and base business decisions on financial data. A real competitive advantage for budding business psychologists.

    • Empirical social research

      6 ECTS

How do I get from a question to reliable answers? You will learn how to plan empirical studies, collect and analyze data - from questionnaire construction to inferential statistics. You will understand when which method is appropriate and how to interpret results correctly. The tools of the trade for anyone who really wants to know what lies behind human behavior.

    • Psychology I

      9 ECTS

Why do people think, feel and act the way they do? You will learn about the fundamental laws of human experience - from perception and memory to emotions and decision-making. In social psychology, you will discover how social forces shape our behavior. The theoretical foundation for everything that follows.

    • Methods I

      6 ECTS

Read numbers, listen to stories - and evaluate both correctly. You will deepen your knowledge of statistical methods and hypothesis tests on the one hand, and learn how qualitative research works on the other: Interviews, observations, focus groups. With tools such as MAXQDA, you will become fit for real research projects - both quantitative and qualitative.

    • Psychology II

      12 ECTS

Deeper into psychology. You will explore what makes people individually different (differential psychology), how the brain and biology control our behavior, where ethical boundaries lie in research - and what clinical psychology has to say about mental disorders such as depression, burnout or the "dark triad". A module that broadens perspectives.

    • Basics of digitization

      9 ECTS

How does the digital world work - and what does this mean for companies? You will learn the basics of business informatics, understand how AI and digitalization are changing business models and become proficient in Excel as a tool for business practice. Theory meets real application - from algorithms to pivot tables.

    • Methods II

      9 ECTS

Research like the pros. You will work in the behavioral science laboratory with instrumental methods such as EEG, eye tracking or skin conductance measurement - and at the same time learn to evaluate complex data sets using multivariate methods in SPSS. A module for anyone who wants to understand what is really behind the numbers and reactions.

    • Marketing psychology

      9 ECTS

Why do people buy what they buy - and how do you advertise in a way that really resonates? You will immerse yourself in the psychology of consumer behavior, learn how advertising and the media influence our decisions and explore current topics such as AI in marketing, virtual reality and advertising ethics. Business psychology at its best.

    • Personnel psychology

      9 ECTS

Finding, understanding and leading people. You will learn how organizations work, what constitutes work motivation and leadership success - and how modern recruitment really works, from employer branding to e-assessment. The foundation for anyone who wants to shape the future of HR.

    • Commercial law

      6 ECTS

Contracts, liability, legal forms - what business psychologists need to know. You will learn how to classify everyday legal situations in a corporate context: from sales contracts and commercial law to choosing the right type of company. Not a law degree, but enough to act confidently in practice and recognize legal risks.

    • Integrative practical research project

      6 ECTS

Theory is a thing of the past - now it's time for research. You will develop your own business psychology question, plan the study, collect data and present your results. Whether consumer behaviour, leadership or organization: for the first time, you will apply all your methodological knowledge independently to a real project.

    • Practical semester / semester abroad

      30 ECTS

Get out of the lecture hall and into real life. You gain practical work experience in a company in Germany or abroad - or study for a semester at a foreign university. Intercultural competence, independence and a direct insight into professional practice included. A semester that makes all the difference.

    • Business Psychology

      9 ECTS

Lead, sell, live well. You will learn what distinguishes scientifically based coaching from pseudo-coaching, how prices and sales pitches work psychologically - and what research really knows about well-being and mental health. A module that makes a difference both professionally and personally.

    • Current topics in business psychology

      9 ECTS

What is really moving the subject right now? This module picks up on current developments and debates in business psychology - practical, relevant and always at the cutting edge. The exact topics depend on what the world is currently dealing with. Guaranteed not to be an off-the-peg module.

    • Thesis

      12 ECTS

Your degree, your topic, your contribution. In 12 weeks you will show what you have learned: You develop your own scientific question from the field of business psychology, research the current state of research and work on it methodically and independently. The crowning degree of a course that really brings psychology and business together.

Faces of Wipsy

"Business psychology combines exactly what I have always been interested in: exciting psychological topics and their application in companies.

I am motivated anew every semester because the content is so practical and varied. I was particularly inspired by the moment when I realized how much better I could really understand human behaviour.

Looking back, choosing this degree program was exactly what I was looking for."

"After my apprenticeship and a few years at work, my thirst for knowledge, my curiosity and my desire for an academic education led me to study.

The fact that I now understand statistics, even though I had hardly had any contact with it before, is a real success for me. For me, business psychology means grasping psychological correlations, critically questioning them and continuously sharpening my view of people and society."

"For me, studying business psychology means growing and learning together in a group in the face of challenges.

Being able to implement work-life balance in companies is what motivates me to continue.

Do you want to do something that will become increasingly important in the future? Apply as a WiPsy at the HWG-LU!"

"For me, studying means daring to try something new and taking a new path for my own professional future. My moment of success in my studies is that I actually managed to pass math and statistics at the first attempt and now I even enjoy it.

It's also a great feeling how we stick together in the degree programs and support each other to get through it together."
