Study flexibly

Flexible studying makes it possible to equalize the course of study by reducing the speed of study. This leads to an extension of the course of study by, for example, 25-50%.  Within the framework of a predefined course of study, content and examinations can be postponed. There are no special admission requirements for participation in flexible study. Students can switch individually between the standard course of study and an individual study period, but this is limited by the offering frequency of postponed courses. Of course, it is also possible to shorten the study period in the same way.

Currently, flexible studying is possible in:

The contact persons & Contact persons:

Benefits:

  • Reduction of the workload through a reduced study speed to, for example, 75%. Module contents and examination performances can be shifted backwards in time. Coordinated course scheduling guarantees the possibility of attending postponed modules in later semesters
  • Flexible change between full-time study and extended standard period of study (only the offering frequency of the modules must be observed)
  • E-learning offers in many degree programs enable additional flexibility in terms of location and time of study and create new learning spaces
  • Individual counseling and support in decision-making and in the course of studies

In addition  to this, you can finance your studies in the flexible study program via BAföG. After the 4th semester, however, evidence of academic achievement must be provided. In this way, the  BAföG office wants to make sure that you are really studying and that you are entitled to BAföG. The evidence of academic achievement shows that it is highly probable that the studies will be completed within the standard period of study. If the evidence of academic achievement cannot be provided, you will no longer receive BAföG!

Extension of the maximum period of support under special conditions:

BAföG support normally ends with the standard period of study. In some cases, however, it is also possible to receive BAföG after the maximum funding period.

Due to these cases, an application for an extension of the maximum funding period can be submitted to BAföG:

  • Pregnancy or raising a child. (However, there are further restrictions here: the child must be under 10 years of age and at least 21 hours per week must continue to be spent on studies).
  • Illness. If you have a chronic or long-term illness, you can apply to extend the maximum period of support.
  • Disability. If one is unable to pursue full-time study due to a disability,  may extend the maximum period of support.
  • Participation on university committees. If one serves on a committee that is required by law and is filled by election, the degree may be extended to the extent that the service has affected the degree.
