Escape from North Korea and today human rights activist - Jihyun Park reports on her life

The East Asia Institute invites to a lecture followed by a discussion with the former North Korean human rights activist Jihyun Park.

Jihyun Park has managed to escape from North Korea twice. She was born in North Korea in the 1960s and worked there as a math teacher until 1998 before crossing the border river "Tuman" the first time with the help of smugglers to escape to China. In China, she was sold to a Chinese farmer for 5,000 yuan (700 euros). She had to slave in the fields and was subjected to the husband's abuse. She had a son, but was picked up by the Chinese police and returned to North Korea without her child. In North Korea, she was sent to a labor camp as a traitor to the people. Nevertheless, she managed to escape to China again, recovered her son and escaped to London with the help of a South Korean pastor. In London, she and her child were granted asylum. Mrs. Park has since worked as a human rights activist in Manchester, where she also ran for city council. Her current husband is also a refugee from North Korea and the two have two other children together.
