Online Lecture: Cold War 2.0? What the conflict between China and the USA means for Europe

Online Lecture on January 19, 2021 at 4:00 p.m.

COVID-19   has plunged the world into an unprecedented crisis that is exacerbating many global problems and conflicts. This includes the system conflict between democratic or authoritarian states that has been simmering for years. The debate about the performance of democratic and authoritarian systems is primarily ignited by China. As an economically successful, technologically advanced and power-politically ambitious autocracy , the People's Republic seems to question the supposed superiority of Western democracies, their values and their open market economies . Between the U.S. and China, this conflict has already fully flared up in recent years and is also affecting Europe. This confronts Germany and Europe with far-reaching decisions. Ursula von der Leyen has proclaimed a "geopolitical commission" for her EU presidency that is to re-locate Europe's role in the world . In the German government , too, defining the position between the U.S. and China is a top foreign policy priority.

After the health and economic crisis, is the world possibly also heading into a tough confrontation political systems or even into a new Cold War?

Germany needs a broad social debate on these questions . The Bertelsmann Stiftung would like to contribute to this together with the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences in a digital workshop discussion. We want to discuss with you how the system conflict is affecting Germany and what action is needed and possible as a result.
