Dimensions of Diversity Relevant to Learning

The heterogeneity of students and student groups is omnipresent for teachers. However, for a successful learning and educational process, the question arises which heterogeneity factors actually have an impact on learning and study success. Different heterogeneity characteristics can therefore have different relevance for learning. Both individual factors (interest and inclinations, attitudes towards studying, learning and examination strategy, etc.) and social factors (educational and cultural background, social environment and financial opportunities, etc.) play a role. Psychological characteristics and cognitive abilities, characteristics related to the organization of learning, and motivational characteristics are also classified as relevant to learning. The main challenge for teachers is now to find methods and approaches that take into account certain diversity aspects relevant to learning. However, these learning-relevant characteristics should not be understood as a difficulty or problem in the learning and teaching process, but also as an opportunity to support students in their individual talents and to raise their potentials.
