Leadership in the age of AI: translate, secure, draw boundaries

What does that mean?
Artificial intelligence is no longer just a technical tool, but is shaping the way companies are managed. AI is like a passenger on a tandem bike: It provides a tailwind by evaluating data, recognizing patterns and taking on repetitive tasks - but the direction remains in human hands.

Leadership in the AI age means clearly defining these roles:

  • Humans control, AI supports.
  • Automation bias (blind trust in systems) and algorithm aversion (excessive skepticism about errors) must be consciously addressed.
  • The challenge is not the technology alone, but the interaction between humans and machines.

Why is this important?

  • Managers must translate data and make it understandable instead of just passing it on.
  • Psychological safety in the team is crucial: only those who are allowed to speak openly can critically reflect on AI.
  • Transparency and fairness in dealing with AI promote trust and acceptance.
  • Responsibility remains with people - managers must draw boundaries and maintain freedom of action.

Current:

At the CompetenceCenter for Leadership Experience at the HWG Ludwigshafen, we will be working intensively on how managers can use AI responsibly from the summer semester 2026. The focus will not only be on technology, but above all on leadership: How can teams be empowered to use AI as a tailwind without giving up control?

  • Topics examined in the summer semester 2026:
  • Psychological safety in AI teams: error culture and open learning
  • Automation bias & algorithm aversion: how trust in AI is created and maintained
  • Human-machine collaboration: new role distributions between humans and algorithms
  • Skills in the age of AI: critical analysis, emotional intelligence, strategic foresight
  • The management task of "translating": Translating data into understandable language
  • Fairness & transparency: ethical guidelines for AI-supported decisions

Outlook:

The first seminars, bachelor's and master's theses will show that AI leadership is not a marginal topic, but is becoming a central component of modern corporate management. Tomorrow's managers will learn to use AI as a powerful driver - without losing their own role at the wheel.

If you are interested in this topic as a student, please register early or see the calls for bachelor's and master's theses.
